Playing a Role; Notes for Participants by Phil Bartle, PhD Workshop Handout Introduction to the role playing game This is an opportunity to engage in an interesting and useful group exercise. Some of you will be assigned roles by the facilitator. These may be roles that you could expect to find in the field, or totally different roles from an imaginary situation. As with many things in life, what you get out of this exercise will be a function of what you put into it. Be enthusiastic, and play the role you are assigned with energy, imagination and enjoyment. When you have been assigned your role, think of what that means to a person in real life who has that position. What would be your goals, your aims, your purpose? What position do you want to defend? What methods would you use? How would you expect to reach your goals? How would you behave? What kind of a personality would you have? Put all these considerations into the role you have been assigned for the play. How would you interact with persons having the other roles in the play? What do you want from each of the others? What would you expect from each of them? How would you treat each of them? Keep your plans and considerations in mind, and be ready to discuss them after the play during the discussion period. Keep it light; remember this is a "play," so play with your role. Enjoy! --» «-- If you copy any text from this site, please link it back to www.scn.org/cmp/ Updated: 2003 April 21
