Walter Kelly Walter Kelly was born 1893, December 24, in Cornwall, Ontario. There is an unsubstantiated story that he was first named Johnson (or Johnstone) and changed his name to Kelly. There were several reasons cited for the change, but none confirmed. He enllisted in the army 1915, January 28. In his Attestation Paper, he listed his next of kin as Edna Kelly, etroit michicgan, USA. His trade was listed as Trainman. Unmarried. No military experience. His height was 5' 7" complexion dark, eyes brown, hair black. Presbyterian. no distinquishing marks. He served in France with the Fourth Brigade CFA. Like many young men with him at the time, he enjoyed some vigorous recreation which landed him in some spot of bother legally and medically. He was demobilized 1919 August 27. Most of his life, after that, was spent working for the CPR. At the time of his retirement, he was the oldest and longest serving conductor on the Canadian Pacific Railway (CPR). He died 1959, November 21, in Chiliwack, BC. Alice Johnson Kelly Jona Gudbjorg Jónsson (Alice Johnson) was born in 1894, December 17, in Winnipeg, daughter of Albert Jonson and Sigridur Thorsteinsdotir. (See the Albert Johnson history page). Having to work as a husehold servant after her father's death, her employers could not pronounce her name so called her "Alice" which stuck. She died in Chiliwack, BC, 1966 March 13. Walter and Alice Walter and Alice had no children of their own, but raised orphan Albert Johnson Bartle (see the Albert Bartle history page), son of Alice's sister, Winnie (see the Jack Bartle history page) in Winnipeg, Manitoba, some time after December 1924, when Winnie died. They maintained close contact with relatives in the Icelandic community of Gimli. After Walter retired, he and Alice moved from Winnipeg to Chiliwack, BC. in July, 1959, about four months before Walter died.
