BELIEFS WITHOUT RELIGIONA creed without a congregationby Phil Bartle, PhDTraining HandoutA religion is a social institution while a belief is something we thinkIt is valuable to look at the myths of the day to have a deeper understanding of the beliefs and cosmology of the people. In today’s society, growing now for over seventy years, most of our myths have been manufactured in Hollywood. It is interesting, therefore, to look at recent surveys, including census data, of peoples’ religious beliefs. A growing number of respondents report that they believe in The Force, as in the Star Wars movie series. This is a large following without a formalized congregation, and without the usual bureaucracy (or formal organization) of a religion. It is our challenge today to explain the rise of those spiritual but non religious beliefs. ––»«––If you copy text from this site, please acknowledge the author(s) |
