POSITIVE AFFIRMATIONSBy Phil Bartle, PhDTraining HandoutIf you say something often enough, it will become trueThis module is focused on the care and maintenance of the mobiliser, activist or animator. If you see a child fall down and get a skinned knee, you will help her or him up, give her or him a hug, and take her or him inside to put on a bandaid and get a drink of cocoa. To stay healthy and happy, to be an effective mobiliser, you need to give yourself the same quality of concern and care. Of all the people you were put on earth to help and to look after, the number one most important is you. Mobilisers do their work because they care. They want to help in the war against poverty. They want to strengthen the down trodden. To be able to do that, they must also love themselves. One very useful means to do that is to make self affirmations. It is quite simple. Take or make a half a dozen statements about how you want to be. “I am a loving and caring person.” “I am calm and strong in the face of adversity.” “I have a sense of humour.” Write them each on a separate piece of paper. Stick each paper in a place where you will see it each day: on the bathroom mirror, on the fridge door, on the door jam where you leave the house. Read them and say them each time you see them. Keep saying them, and they will become true. It is like magic. Not superstitious magic, but a remarkable phenomena supported by psychological studies and research. How it works is not important here. That is works is important, and another tool to add to your mobiliser tool box. Positive affirmations. ––»«––© Copyright 1967, 1987, 2007 Phil Bartle
