Story Three

He celebrated at the celebration

by Phil Bartle, PhD

Vignette

Elvis was happy. His first community project, stimulated and guided by him but carried out by the community members, was just about completed. All that remained was the end of project celebration. He began celebrating the day before. Why work?

He did not notify the VIP Government officials or make up some briefing handouts for them. He forgot about the international donors. He did not contact his friends in the press, with an honorarium for one tame journalist who would write an article emphasising the community input to the project, and arrange for transport for the press. He did not remind the project committee members to get the soft drinks and snacks to serve at the celebration. He did not remind them to contact the school headmaster to arrange for the children to come out and sing for those attending. He did not remind them to borrow the PA system. He did not remind the committee to do the same for the local cultural group to perform their drumming and dancing, with their little play about the project. He did not remind the committee chair to say something about this being the beginning of the next community project.

Oh, yes Elvis celebrated. The project celebration was a disaster.
